This was one of my first assignments in college. Luckily for me, I had spent all of my high-school years overachieving in art class. I had some previous experience in stippling, hatching, and cross-hatching. The premise of the assignment was to take photos of shoes and turn those photos into this grid layout. We stippled in our sketchbooks and then took the photos into Photoshop to balance the colors making it look like vector artwork.
